| Le pont Notre Dame: Like
the Petit Pont , this bridge is at one of the most ancient and historic crossing-places
on the Seine. It links the Right Bank with the Isle de la Cité. In ancient
times there was the 'Grand Pont' (Big Bridge) then in the IXth century the 'Pont
des Planches' (Plank Bridge). After it disappeared, the first 'Pont de Notre Dame'
was built in 1413, nearly 200 years after the construction of the cathedral had
begun. In 1507 a new bridge was put in place and soon became the site of bustling
trade. In 1853 it was replaced, and in 1919 the stone central span was replaced
by steel, giving the bridge its current aspect. Le pont Louis-Philippe
This bridge was built in 1861-1862 in replacement of the
"reform bridge", which became too narrow. It connects the Saint-Louis
island to the right bank of the Seine river. | | |
